Chiropractic Care for Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD): Pregnancy Pelvic Pain Relief

If you experience severe pelvic pain in the inner thigh, lower abdomen, hips or groin area during pregnancy it’s likely you have a condition called symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD). Approximately one of 35 women experience SPD, making it hard to climb stairs, stand up, sit down or walk. Some women even report a clicking noise to go with the pain. If you have these symptoms during pregnancy, schedule an appointment with Lakewood, Edgewater and Wheat Ridge prenatal chiropractor Dr. Fletcher at Well Beings Chiropractic Family Health. Chiropractic care can provide drug-free pain relief treatment for SPD and help you and your baby have a healthy, comfortable pregnancy, delivery and postnatal experience: 303.238.6500.

What is Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction Injury?

The pubic symphysis is a joint in the front of the pelvic bone. Normal pregnancy hormones relax the cartilage and ligaments in the pelvis to prepare for the baby’s delivery—sometimes too much—leading to dislocation injury of the pelvic bones. Severe pain, swelling and sensitivity in the pelvis are prime symptoms. Although SPD is an uncommon complication, women who do have it suffer excruciating pain, often long after the baby is born.

How Can My Chiropractor Provide SPD Relief during Pregnancy?

Women who receive chiropractic adjustments for SPD relief during and after pregnancy report long-term, drug-free pain pelvic relief—without surgery. Our pregnancy chiropractor uses a wide range of chiropractic adjustment techniques (like the Webster Technique) and soft-tissue support therapies to help a woman’s body heal and adjust to the growing baby—and as the body adjusts after the child is born. Some of these supportive therapies include:

  • Ergonomics and movement coaching to remain active without further injury
  • Sleeping with a body pillow between the knees and under the belly for spinal support and pain relief
  • Coaching in specific stretches and pelvic floor exercises (Kegel) to restore strength in the pelvis
  • Taking frequent breaks from sitting
  • Ongoing chiropractic adjustments to optimize pelvic and spinal position for healthy nervous system function and healing
