What I Learned…

lightbulb_0I have been under chiropractic care at Well Beings since fall of 2010.  I started working at Well Beings in the fall of 2012.  I attended my first Chiropractic Conference in fall of 2015.  I am amazed that after all this time, I can still learn things about chiropractic that seem obvious, but that finally turn on the lightbulb in my head.  I wanted to share a few of those ah-ha moments I experienced, and maybe turn on some lightbulbs for you.

What is common is not normal. This was a very powerful statement that had me thinking long after the speaker said it.  We are constantly bombarded by media everywhere we turn.  We have come to believe that if we hear about something from 2-3 different people or sources, that it’s common or normal.  On the flip side, when we hear about something new, we automatically look at it as an outlier or uncommon.  In relation to what we hear and see in the office – I have an infant who is fussy, I am a runner so I have bad knees, I’m older and my back is bad – we assume this is just the normal course of life, not to be questioned.  What we need to realize is that “common” and “normal” are not interchangeable.  We need to change our perception of what normal is so that a body in a state of health is our normal, even though it may not be the current common state around us.

A structure in a state of health can withstand stressors. They are created to survive and thrive. Disease can more easily attack and overcome a weakened system.  By keeping our bodies aligned and free of subluxations, it will be able to take on outside stressors without being completely depleted. One presenter at the chiropractic conference likened a weakened structure to a bent nail, which was an eye opening visual for me.

familyChiropractic is universal. Over the years I have heard many stories of chiropractic success from all walks of life.  Seeing all the chiropractors and chiropractic assistants in the audience, it really hit home that no matter what the practice focus, the chiropractic adjustment aligns the system.  Whether it’s a newborn, teenager, active adult, pregnant woman or someone with a physical injury, chiropractic care restores the body’s power to heal itself from whatever stressor it is experiencing.

Finding My Way

Over the last three years I have given all of me to motherhood. It’s the way I do things. A passion is ignited in me and I “go big or go home”. I waited a long time to be a mom and I am grateful, so very grateful that I get to be Jack’s mom. And, over the years I have missed being in business. However, as the desire to “go back to work” kept surfacing I pushed it away because I did not see a way to do both. If I went back to practice full time, we would then put Jack in daycare full-time and that is not a choice that Jacob and I wanted to make.

diamondThere have been many universal messages over the last year indicating that I needed to create balance with motherhood. I didn’t want to listen because I thought I was being a “bad” mom if I followed a dream. I could just put things on hold until Jack was older. I finally realized that by going for my dreams, I am teaching Jack to go for his dreams. I am teaching him that there are many parts to this person he calls mom. (He actually calls me Maura 90% of the time but that’s just a minor detail.) Instead of feeling guilty about approaching and embracing my goals, desires, and dreams I was suddenly empowered by the important life lesson I am sharing with Jack.

One of my passions is business. I know to some, this may sound weird, but I LOVE business. I love creating business ideas, strategizing, marketing, and executing. Another passion of mine is natural health. It brings me great pleasure to share ideas on natural health with my family, my community, and really … the world. Thirdly, I love teaching. As a mom, I teach. As a chiropractor, I teach. As I salesperson, I teach.

This all has come together for me in my new adventure with doTERRA. We started using essential oils years ago. Over the last year we have significantly increased our awareness and therefore use of essential oils as a way to support our health in many areas. We use essential oils for emotional balance, stress support, immune support, sleep support, cooking, cleaning, and more. We had NO, I mean NO interest in the business side of doTERRA initially. However, the more we used the oils, the more we more buying and my dear friend Stacy introduced me to the benefits of the business.

I recently returned from doTERRA’s annual convention. I am beyond impressed with their company, their products, their humanitarian efforts, and the fact that the majority of people who generate the revenue are WOMEN/ MOMS!!! In the few days I have been working the business of essential oils, something in me has come alive again. I have more energy than I have had in a long time. My body feels better. I feel happy. I am honoring a side of me that I have been ignoring.  I am choosing the doTERRA business because it offers me the opportunity to stay at home with Jack and build a home based business.

For those wondering, I am not leaving the chiropractic practice. I have a passion for helping pregnant women that remains unwavering. I will continue to utilize my expertise to help more women have comfortable pregnancies and the birth of their desire through prenatal chiropractic care. One of my life’s work is to help women be all that they can be and this doTERRA business is simply another way to do that.

Essential oils are a great way to support your health naturally and I want to get the message out to as many people as I can. Stay tuned for announcements for upcoming classes in Lakewood, CO and online. I also am available for classes at your business, school, social, group, or home. I am offering individual complimentary essential oils consultations. To schedule a consultation email me at [email protected].

If this post creates curiosity for you around the benefits of essential oils and/ or the possibility of a home based business, please reach out to me. You can email me [email protected], PM me, text me, call me- whatever. I want to help. I know there are moms like me who want to be at home with their children while also creating an income. Please visit my website at www.mydoterra.com/maurafletcher.

When something ignites a passion in me, I’m pretty unstoppable and life is fun. I invite you to join the ride.

Looking Back on Five Years with Drs. Maura & Jacob

Well Beings opened its doors in July 2010 with the mission of educating, empowering, and inspiring people toward health, healing, and wholeness through the chiropractic adjustment and a vitalistic lifestyle. Five years later, Drs. Maura & Jacob take a moment to reflect on how far they have come, what they remember fondly and what challenges they have faced.

Old Practice Back Room

Main adjusting area before the remodel.

Opening the doors on a warm July day in 2010, Dr. Jacob says he was thrilled to realize his longtime dream of finally starting to practice in his own office in Colorado.  Along the way, two major milestones stand out – getting married and Jack’s birth. He remarked, “These two things have helped me be an even better chiropractor.”

Drs. Maura & Jacob purchased the business, which had previously been known as Lakewood Back and Neck Center.  Dr. Maura remembers the huge undertaking to change the look and feel of the office (a complete remodel!) as well as the name and logo.  “It was really cool one time when I was sitting in the reception area and there were only pregnant women and children surrounding me.  I had a big smile on my face realizing our dream had come true!” she said.

Over the years Well Beings has had fun celebrating holidays and giving back to the community in creative ways. Dr. Jacob’s favorite is the 12 days of Chiropractic, where we give away a different gift or prize each day leading up to Christmas.  Pack the Pantry, in November, is a standout for Dr. Maura.  She remembers “It was one of the first promotions that we did and I remember feeling so proud seeing all the food we collected, knowing that we were helping the community.”

There have also been some unexpected challenges and surprises during the past five years.  Dr. Maura can’t believe how far the business has come in the past five years and almost always runs into a client when out and about in the community.  Dr. Jacob felt like he had a crash course in running a business and was able to overcome and work through some of those challenges by the support they have received from other local businesses and wonderfully helpful clients.  “It’s amazing to have such a close community not only here in Lakewood, but the surrounding West Metro Denver area.”

Out for a hike along a glacier.

Many clients wonder just what do the doctors do on Thursdays, their weekday off.  Dr. Jacob likes to be active – skiing, hiking, working out and learning.  His favorite thing to do is just be with his family, whether at home, in the mountains or on another adventure in the Denver area.  Dr. Maura enjoys discovering new meals because she loves nutrition and cooking.  She also loves practicing yoga because it gives her strength and balance, physically, mentally, and spiritually.

So where do they go from here? There is only one direction they wish to go, and that is up. Dr. Jacob’s vision for Well Beings Chiropractic Family Health is continued growth so they can help more families live healthy lives. He sees them adding more practitioners, growing to a new space, and being the premier location in West Denver for pediatric, prenatal, and family health. Dr. Maura adds, “When people think prenatal chiropractic care, they think Well Beings. When people think pediatric care, they think Well Beings.”

GreenSmoothie21Let’s raise up our glasses of green smoothies and toast Well Beings on many more years of spreading health and wellness throughout our community! Cheers!

We are excited to show them how much we appreciate them and can’t wait to see how we grow over the next five years.”

West Denver Chiropractor and Colic

Expecting parents often hear a similar phrase: “Get your sleep/rest now, because you won’t get any with a baby!” This isn’t simply because babies, well, need a lot. It’s more because babies have a reputation for their finicky sleep schedules and unexpected crying fits. In fact, 20-25 percent of babies are said to have colic, according to the American Pregnancy Association. Colic is frequently defined by the Rule of 3’s, known as the Wessell Criteria, in which a colicky infant is one who “cries for more than three hours a day, for more than three days a week, for over three weeks.” Colic usually dissipates by the time a baby is 9 months old. But babies and their parents don’t need to suffer through almost a year of inconsolable crying and missed sleep.

Lakewood Chiropractor, Dr. Jacob specializes in adjusting the youngest of patients, beginning with newborns. Chiropractic adjustments for babies are of course gentler than they might be for adults, and the babies don’t experience any discomfort. Instead, they quickly experience relief, as baby Edith did. After all, even babies have nervous system interference and pathways that need to be cleared, often from before birth, due to improper positioning in the womb or doctor interference (such as the use of forceps, suction or traction) during delivery.

Edith’s mom Bethany a Denver resident, brought her to see  west Denver pediatric chiropractor Dr. Jacob because the 2-month-old was frequently inconsolably crying and suffering from digestion problems. Bethany said that, immediately after Edith’s gentle adjustment by Dr. Jacob, it was like she had a new baby. The crying stopped and Edith started falling asleep with ease.

Bethany and Edith are a perfect example of how much of a difference chiropractic can make for babies and, by extension, their parents. So the next time someone warns you that you won’t get any sleep with a baby, tell them not to worry — you have a chiropractor on your side.
